Abstract

Hypothesis / aims of study
Obesity is an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation, it is a chronic, relapsing progressive diseases with a significant public health concern and it has reached an epidemic proportion in both developing and developed countries. There are many risk factors for the development of obesity including health related issues and environmental factors such as unhealthy eating, number of calories consumed, type of diet, and frequency and timing of meals. Obesity is a serious relapsing progressive chronic disease with a significant public health concern, and it is a risk factor for several serious health problems one of the most problems is Erectile Dysfunction.
This study aimed to estimate the erectile dysfunction effect of obesity among young adult population .
Study design, materials and methods
A cross-sectional survey was conducted where a convenient nonprobability sample of young adults were included in the study, from Aljouf region, KSA. The survey included questions about participants’ demographics, morbid history, clinical aspects of obesity, nutritional history, and a questionnaire on Erectile problems, anxiety stress and depression. Data was analyzed using SPSS; where Chi square test, logistic regression and multiple linear regression were used. The level of significance was 0.05.
Results
Out of 394 participants, 20.3% were overweight, while 15% were obese. Multiple regression analysis revealed that increased BMI was significantly associated with increased erectile problems (B=0.141), and mean BMI was significantly higher in the males compared to the females (B= 2.252).
Interpretation of results
Obesity had significant familial tendency (p <0.05). Obesity significantly interfered with social life activity of the young adults (p<0.05). Obese young adults were significantly more teased by others about their weight and had negative opinion about themselves (p < 0.000, and p< 0.004). A large proportion of the young adults had unhealthy nutritional habits.
Concluding message
Obesity is common among the young adult male population. Increased BMI was significantly associated with increased the erectile disorders. Obesity had a familial tendency, and   negatively affects the social activity of the young adult subjects.
