This workshop aims to provide an overview of the state of the art regarding continence and its care in long-term care. Epidemiology of incontinence in nursing homes and challenges of the current identified deficiencies in knowledge, skills, assessment and management will be presented. We will review the state of the evidence for conservative management of urinary and fecal incontinence in long term care. Innovative resources such as the use of technological solutions for continence care delivery will be highlighted.

Learning Objectives

  • appreciate the extent and nature of incontinence amongst older adult nursing home residents
  • be able to apply conservative management of urinary and fecal incontinence in frail older adult residents.
  • Understand the potential role of innovative (e.g. technological) solutions in improving the delivery of continence care for older adults.
