Dr. Chai has received national attention for his work in the treatment of urinary incontinence and his research in bladder physiology including SUFU Zimskind Award, SUFU Distinguished Service Award and the AUA Victor A. Politano Award. He was the recipient of the Continence Champion award in 2022 from the National Association for Continence. He is currently Chair of the Department of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine and Chief of Urology at Boston Medical Center. He previously held urology faculty positions at Yale and University of Maryland. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree. from Johns Hopkins University and M.D. from Indiana University, he completed a residency in urological surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He was a NIH K08 (Career Development Award for physician-scientist) awardee under the tutelage from Dr. William D. Steers and Jeremy B. Tuttle at University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Dr. Chai's research has focused on translational urothelial biologic research in understanding how urothelial mechanisms contribute to lower urinary tract symptoms and defense function against bacteria. He has performed large RCTs in areas of urinary incontinence.
Dr. Chai is an Associate Editor of Journal of Urology and on the Editorial Board of American Journal of Physiology - Renal Physiology. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Board of Urology. He was a member of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Bone, Reproductive and Urologic Drugs Advisory Committee (BRUDAC).
