Jean’s long time association with Cochrane has meant she’s most known internationally for her contributions to systematic reviews of randomised trials of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) interventions to prevent or treatment urinary incontinence in women. When she worked as a physiotherapist in continence management the most common question she used to ask was ‘what is the best PFMT?’ and that’s why she’s chosen this topic for her lecture. Jean is no longer registered or practising as a physiotherapist, and is employed full time in research, teaching, and thesis supervision. Working in interdisciplinary research teams with talented colleagues has enabled her to extend her research to include qualitative methodologies that ask women and clinicians about their experiences, and to increase her knowledge of fields such as health psychology that have much to offer in improving understanding about how to work effectively with women. Jean completed her PhD in 2003 after 18 years of clinical practice, and is now a Professor of Rehabilitation at the Te Whare Wānanga o Ōtago ki Pōneke / The University of Otago Wellington in Aotearoa New Zealand.
