Ulrich Mehnert studied medicine from 1998 to 2004 at Ulm University, Germany, and completed a 4-months clinical internship in the US, including but not limited to the Department of Urology at the Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT, US, under supervision of Prof. Dr. med. R. M. Weiss. In 2005, he earned his doctorate (Dr. med., MD) at Ulm University and started his urology residency in the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel, Germany, under supervision of Prof. Dr. med. K.-P. Jünemann.
From 2006 to 2009, Dr. Mehnert worked as a resident and postdoctoral research fellow in the Neuro-Urology unit of the Spinal Cord Injury Center at Balgrist University Hospital under supervision of Prof. Dr. med. B. Schurch. Since 2009, he is project leader in the field of neuro-urological research at Balgrist University Hospital. In 2010, he continued his training in urology with focus on surgical therapy in neuro-urological patients at the Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière, Sorbonne University, Paris, France under supervision of Prof. Dr. med. E. Chartier-Kastler and Prof. Dr. med. M. O. Bitker.
From 2011 to 2014, Dr. Mehnert completed his speciality training in urology under supervision of Prof. Dr. med. J. Noldus in the department of Urology and Neuro-Urology at the Marienhospital Herne, Ruhr University Bochum and obtained his specialist title / board certification as a urologist in 2014. In the same year he became Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU). Subsequently, he returned to Balgrist University Hospital where he worked as consultant urologist and since 2018 as senior consultant in the Department of Neuro-Urology.
In 2017, Dr. Mehnert received the Venia Legendi (Habilitation, senior lectureship) from the University of Zürich and in 2018 he earned his PhD degree from the University of Maastricht, The Netherlands. In addition, he received in 2018 his sub-specialisation certificate in Neuro-Urology.
Apart from his clinical commitment, Dr. Mehnert is Vice-Chairman of the Swiss Continence Foundation since 2011. He was co-founder of the International Neuro-Urology Society (INUS) in 2015 and until 2019 the first treasurer of this Society. He is an active member of several national and international societies and reviewer of several medical journals.
Dr. Mehnert is the author of more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and is the principal investigator/main applicant of several research grants (inter alia of Swiss National Science Foundation). His main research interests comprise the investigation of supraspinal lower urinary tract control and the neurophysiological assessment of lower urinary tract dysfunction.
