GAMAL M. GHONIEM, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Ghoniem is currently the Professor and Vice-Chairman, Chief Division of Female Urology, Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery and Voiding dysfunction, Department of Urology, UC Irvine Health. He had been Head, section of Voiding Dysfunction, Female Urology and Reconstruction and chairman of Medical Education at Cleveland Clinic Florida up till June 2011.
Born in Alexandria Egypt, 1950. Graduated from Alexandria Medical School in November, 1974. Residency completed at University of Alexandria, Alexandria, Egypt in 1978 and at that time appointed Assistant Lecturer. Departed Egypt in 1980 for a fellowship in Neurourology and Female Urology at Brown University (Rhode Island) and also trained in Urology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Appointed to Tulane University, Department of Urology as Assistant Professor in 1987 and Chief, Section of Urodynamics and Female Urology. Appointed Associate Professor of Urology in 1991 with a joint appointment in the Department of Gynecology. In 1998 he was promoted to Professor of Urology and clinical professor of Gynecology. Other positions include; Residency Program Director, Department of Urology, 1992-1994, Secretary and President of The Egyptian American Urological Association, 1991-1995 and Vice-President 1995 and President 1997, (Section of Urology) for Southern Medical Association. Chairman of the Scientific Committee, Urodynamics Society, 1997, and chairman of the main session of the same society 2002.
He is a member of several societies including, American Urological Association (AUA), Southern Medical Association (SMA), Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association (SEAUA), Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology, International Continence Society, International Urogynecology Association (IUGA) and American Urogynecology Society. He was Thesis supervisor to many fellows. He is the chairman of Research and Development Committee (IUGA) and member of Education Committee (SUFU), and elected member of the scientific committee of ICS.
He has two recent books: “Practical Guide to Female Pelvic Medicine – Taylor & Francis” and “Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: a multidiscsciplinary approach – Springer”. He has had more than 120 publications; including: peer rviewed papers, 10 videos, audio-tapes, review articles, editorials, and 23 book chapters. Also, he is editor of the Special Issue of Neurourology and Urodynamics for “Animal Models to study lower urinary tract”, and co-editor of Special issue of Clinics in Colon and Rectal surgery for “Pelvic floor dysfunction: the importance of multidisciplinary approach”. He is on the Editorial Board of Journal of International Urogynecology, Pelvic Floor Medicine Journal, and Journal of Neurourology and Urodynamics. He is a reviewer of many journals. He has been appointed as an expert reviewer for Journal of Urology, Urology, Neurourology and Urodynamics and American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served as a consultant of the surgical treatment group of the 1st International Consultation on urinary incontinence, 1998 and member of the same committee in the 2nd Consultation on Urinary Incontinence, 2001. He was appointed by NIH as a reviewer on the study sections of Bladder Physiology and Urinary Incontinence.
Currently, he is the chairman of Research and Development committee of the IUGA, and elected member of the scientific committee of ICS. He was selected as one of The Best Doctors in America 2005-2006, and America’s top Physicians 2006.
Dr. Ghoniem has improved and introduced many diagnostic and surgical techniques in the field of urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse such as ISD classification, vaginal pack test , suburethral sling, Genisphere injection, bladder neck wrap, male sling, and transobturator technique.
