On the anatomical relationship between bladder and bowel function and dysfunction

Peter Petros and Michael Swash

Bladder and bowel have almost identical mechanisms for storage and evacuation. Pelvic muscles support these organs from below, contract against their suspensory ligaments to close urethra and anus and open them to evacuate. Ligaments damaged by childbirth weaken muscle forces to cause incontinence and emptying difficulties.

Integral Theory Update book

Edited by Peter Petros and Ms Vani Bardetta

Annals of Translational Medicine

The series of 19 papers in this 2024 Annals of Translational Medicine (ATM) publication provides anatomical insights based into pathogenesis and treatment of bladder, bowel, chronic pelvic pain, prolapse. The issue has been authored by 45 international experts in Urology, Gynecology, Coloproctology, Neurology, Physical Therapy and Biomechanical Engineering, and is augmented by 60 short explanatory videos.

The Female Pelvic Floor 3rd Edition

Function, Dysfunction and Management, according to the Integral Theory

Peter Petros DSc DS (UWA) PhD (Uppsala) MB BS MD (Syd) FRCOG FRANZCOG CU
3rd Edition 2010, 365 pages. Springer Verlag Heidelberg ISBN 978-3-642-03786-3
Translated into 10 languages: Spanish, Italian, German, Polish, Romanian, Turkish, Russian,Japanese, Chinese, Korean.

To whom the book is aimed: physicians, pelvic floor therapists, physiologists, urologists, gynaecologists, urogynecologists, colorproctologists, pelvic floor radiologists, urodynamicists, ultrasound experts.

The Integral Theory of Female Urinary Incontinence (IT) evolved from anomalies in prototype midurethral sling operations performed by Peter Petros in 1988-89 at Royal Perth Hospital. The IT states bladder control is external, from pelvic muscles contracting against ligaments. Bladder/bowel/pain/prolapse dysfunctions are mainly caused by collagen weakness in ligaments which can be repaired.

Hundreds of original anatomical images and drawings inform the book chapters:

  1. Overview
  2. The Anatomy and Dynamics of Pelvic Floor Function and Dysfunction
  3. Diagnosis of Connective Tissue Damage . . .
  4. Reconstructive Pelvic Floor Surgery
  5. Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation
  6. Mapping the Dynamics of Connective Tissue Dysfunction.

Post-Prostatectomy Incontinence – Evaluation and Management

Available from: https://www.amazon.com/Post-Prostatectomy-Incontinence-Evaluation-Ajay-Singla/dp/3319558277

This text provides a comprehensive, state – of – the art review of this new and emerging field, as the number of men who suffer from post-prostatectomy incontinence increases by greater than 10,000 per year. How to evaluate and manage this devastating disorder has become a necessary part of nearly every urologic practice. This book serves a valuable resource for physicians with an interest in managing patients with post-prostatectomy incontinence. In addition, treatment includes algorithms and suggested office evaluation that will help guide conservative management that is appropriate for most patients. The text provides insight into the history of male incontinence surgery, as well as the current surgical techniques for the operative management of post-prostatectomy incontinence in those who fail conservative management. This text reviews current data regarding surgical outcomes for the most common and newly developed incontinence procedures, as well as step-by-step descriptions of the key surgical steps necessary for success. All chapters are written by world renowned experts in this field and include the most up to date clinical information.

Rare Congenital Genitourinary Anomalies

M. Fahmy
An Illustrated Reference Guide
Available from: www.springer.com
  • Excellent guide to rare congenital genitourinary anomalies
  • Offers simplicity on a complex subject
  • Includes numerous informative illustrations
  • Will serve as an excellent reference

Patients with rare diseases, affecting less than 1 in 2000 persons, frequently experience delays or errors in diagnosis, sometimes with tragic consequences. Even after the diagnosis has been established, the quality of health care delivered is often poor. This book, which is both textbook and atlas, covers the full range of rare congenital genitourinary anomalies encountered in males and females, many of which have previously been described only in sporadic case reports. In the case of the more established anomalies, variants are presented. For each anomaly, information is provided on incidence, similar cases, clinical presentation, diagnosis, possible management and outcome. Informative supporting illustrations are presented for each anomaly, and the book will serve as an excellent reference for all pediatricians, urologists and surgeons who are responsible for the care of such patients.

I am very pleased to introduce this textbook on urodynamics entitled Urodynamic Evaluation and Its Clinical Application. This is a complete review of the field and will answer many of the questions that the reader may have regarding many aspects of lower urinary tract dysfunction in men, women, and children.

The book is well organized in the approach. The basic aspects are reviewed in the chapters covering physiology and pharmacology. Auxiliary methods of evaluation including pad tests, voiding diary, postvoid residual, and imaging are then discussed. All of the different urodynamic tests, from basic to advanced, are then presented. Non-invasive urodynamics are reviewed and quality control in testing are addressed in separate chapters. Readers are then given information on how to build a UrodynamicLaboratory.

Clinical problems in which Urodynamics have been applied are covered in detail. The impact of urinary incontinence on quality of life is presented. Problems in childhood such as enuresis, myelomeningocele, infravesical obstruction are reviewed. Neurological disorders and sexuality are discussed. Common disorders in adults such as BPO, postprostatectomy incontinence, OAB and current treatment modalities are examined. Female urologic disorders including stress incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and outlet obstruction are brought into focus. The challenging topic of Incontinence in the Elderly is presented in the final chapter.

This is the 4th edition of the book and the Editor, Carlos Arturo Levi D’Ancona should be congratulated for bringing together such a talented array of authors who have addressed these clinically relevant topics.

Urodynamics Second Edition

Available from: www.ics.org

The aim of this concise introduction to urodynamics is to describe the extent to which clinical observations can be accounted for by simple mechanical concepts, in order to enable medical physicists and bioengineers to interpret their observations of complex pressures and flows in the bladder and urethra. The peculiarities of flow in highly distensible tubes are described, and an explanation of the mechanical behaviour of smooth muscle is given. A prior medical or physiological knowledge is not assumed.

“ICS is extremely grateful for the opportunity to republish this seminal work by Dr. Derek Griffiths, one of ‘the greats’ in the field. This textbook remains an essential resource for those with either a clinical or research interest in hydrodynamics of the lower urinary tract and multi-channel, pressure subtracted cystometry which was used by many senior ICS members during their training.”
