This week’s Hall of Fame member is Lori Birder.
Name: Lori Birder
Profession: Basic Scientist
Biography: Lori Birder is a tenured Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology/Chemical Biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and an Associate Member of the UPSOM Aging Institute. Lori's research has focused on the 'sensory' properties of the urinary bladder urothelium in health and disease. More recently, Lori's laboratory and collaborators (both basic science and clinical researchers) have broadened this scope to examine how chronic stress in addition to aging can result in significant changes in lower urinary tract function and how this might be impacted by treatments to restore bladder health. Her research has been durably funded by the NIH including an NIH MERIT award and currently two NIH R01 grants studying bladder dysfunction with stress/pain and aging. Lori has served on numerous committees/boards including external adviser for several European urology initiatives. Lori is a member of several editorial boards including Neurourology and Urodynamics, and scientific societies including ICS, SUFU, ESSIC, INUS and IASP and has authored/co-authored more than 175 articles/reviews in peer-reviewed international journals. Lori currently sits on the ICS Board of Trustees.
Why are you an ICS member: ICS provides a fantastic forum for interactions with basic scientists, clinicians, nurses, physiotherapists, and other groups which is not often seen with other societies in functional urology.
Which was your first ICS meeting: Heidelberg, 28th - 30th August 2002
