Why are you an ICS member: First and foremost, I have always enjoyed having colleagues from around the world and learning about the different medical systems and practices. Secondarily, I think ICS is unique among professional societies in being a truly multidisciplinary organisation.
Which was your first ICS meeting: Denver, 23rd - 26th August 1999
Special ICS memories: I love all the Galas, dancing in front of the Sphinx in Egypt was certainly a highlight.
Biggest influence: Dr. Shlomo Raz
The one paper (or book/article/video) you must read/view: A lecture called "The State of BPS/IC: "The Emperor Has No Clothes".
If you could go back in time what advice would you give to yourself and why: I've started only going to meetings if I also take vacation days along with the meeting. Wish I would have started a long time ago.
Biography: Christopher K. Payne, MD. Emeritus Professor of Urology, Stanford University Medical School. Dr. Christopher Payne grew up in West Virginia and attended undergraduate school at the University of Virginia where he received a BA degree in Chemistry with a minor in English. He attended Vanderbilt University for medical school after which he completed a urology residency at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After completing a fellowship in Female Urology, Urodynamics, and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at UCLA in 1992-1993, he was recruited to Stanford University in August 1993 to initiate a new program in Female Urology and NeuroUrology. He advanced to a tenured position as Professor of Urology and served continuously until his retirement from Stanford in 2014 as an Emeritus Professor. Dr. Payne’s most recent venture is a joint practice with Dr. Jeannette Potts: Vista Urology and Pelvic Pain Partners. The goal is to provide personalized urologic care while continuing to advance our knowledge base through clinical research. Dr. Payne is nationally and internationally recognized as a leader on issues in female urology having served on NIH advisory/oversight panels on urinary incontinence and interstitial cystitis. His expertise in clinical research has been recognized through two NIH grants principal investigator grants focusing on treatment of interstitial cystitis. He has published numerous articles and book chapters on urinary incontinence, pelvic reconstructive surgery, and interstitial cystitis. He twice been elected as a Trustee for the International Continence Society, a position he currently holds. He has been recognized as one of America’s Top Doctors for ten consecutive years. Dr. Payne has a special interest in Obstetric Fistula and Women’s Health issues in the developing world. He is currently the President of the Board of the Worldwide Fistula Fund and has served on the Fistula and Developing World Committees of the International Continence Society.
