At the 104th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Urological Association (JUA), Sendai, Japan, April 22-25, 2016, the ICS Education Committee and Neurourology Committee co-Chaired a symposium on LUTS in Parkinson’s Disease. More than 5,000 urologists attended the larger international Congress, also making this good venue in which to advertise ICS 2016 in Tokyo.
The ICS Symposium was led by Ryugi Sakakibara, neurologist and past member of the ICS neurourology committee. Frankie Bates, Dr. Sakakibara and Dr. Chartier-Kastler reviewed diagnosis, BPH management and global management of voiding disorders in the specific population of men with Parkinson’s Disease. A key message was the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to these patients and their urologic management. The symposium faculty reflected this, consisting of a neurologist, urologist and specialised nurse. An estimated 7-10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson's disease. Four percent of people with PD are diagnosed before the age of 50, and the incidence increases with age. At some point, all urologists encounter Parkinson’s patients in their practice. The symposium presented an excellent opportunity to promote the recently-published ICS Neurourology Committee guideline on the management of bladder dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease and other gait disorders.
The ICS Education Committee and Neurourology Committee would like to extend their gratitude to the president of the 104th JUA Annual Meeting, Yoichi Arai, and the president of JUA, Masato Fujisawa, for granting the 90 minute symposium. It was a wonderful opportunity to share scientific and clinical expertise. The welcome reception was a great opportunity to try Japanese delicacies and meet other international guests. Thank you again to our hosts. See you in Tokyo !
