Impact of the Mesh Controversy on SUI/POP Surgery

The learning objectives of the roundtable. Participants will:

  1. understand how the mesh controversy has changed the way in which clinicians counsel their patients and often withhold surgery or advise less effective procedures in order to practice defensive medicine.
  2. Understand the rate and management of mesh complications related to continence and prolapse surgery

The use of mesh throughout the world varies from country to country. In the UK there has been a total “pause” on the use of incontinence tapes and vaginal meshes since July 2018. In other parts of the world there is limited use with increased vigilance and in some countries tapes for incontinence are still widely used. This means that women with stress urinary incontinence and prolapse are receiving different types of care in different parts of the world.

What are the recommended readings ahead of the session?

  1. “First do no harm” the report by Baroness Cumberlege of the IMMDS published July 2020.
  2. ICI 6th edition Chapter: Surgical management of prolapse.
