Marcio Averbeck, MD, MSc, PhD
Dr. Marcio A. Averbeck received his medical degree from the Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil (2003). His specialization in Urology (Medical Residency Program) was obtained in 2008 from the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre, Brazil. From 2008 to 2010 he was a member of the kidney and pancreas transplantation team at Santa Casa Hospital Complex, in Porto Alegre. In 2009 he was awarded a scholarship from the EAU/EUSP (European Urological Scholarship Program) and became a Clinical Fellow of the Neuro-Urology Unit in Innsbruck, Austria (host: Prof. Helmut Madersbacher).
Since he came back to Brazil, he became involved with residents training at Presidente Vargas Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Porto Alegre. Dr. Averbeck has also an appointment as invited Professor at Unisinos University (Porto Alegre, Brazil). The urologist has obtained his Master’s Degree and his PhD in Health Sciences from the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (2011/2017). In 2014, he was invited to take over as Neuro-Urology Coordinator at Moinhos de Vento Hospital (affiliated to Johns Hopkins Medicine International).
Dr. Averbeck is an active member of several medical associations/societies, including the International Continence Society (Former ICS Neuro-Urology Promotion Committee Member and Deputy-Chair of the ICS Standardization Steering Committee), American Confederation of Urology (CAU), European Association of Urology (EAU), International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS), International Neuro-Urology Society (INUS Treasurer), American Urological Association (AUA), Brazilian Urological Society (SBU Head of International Affairs Committee) and EAU (associate member of the EAU Section of Female and Functional Urology - ESFFU).
Dr. Averbeck acts as reviewer of several indexed medical journals, including Conntinence and Continence Reports, European Urology, The Journal of Urology, Neurourology and Urodynamics, The Journal of Sexual Medicine, Urology, International Urogynecology Journal, International Brazilian Journal of Urology, International Journal of Urology, Journal, the Journal of Neurotrauma, PLOS One Journal, Urologia Internacionalis, Advances in Therapy Journal, among others. He is currently an editorial board member of the Continence and Continence Reports, which are the official scientific journals of the International Continence Society (ICS).
Dr. Averbeck is the author of more than 80 pubmed-indexed scientific paper and dozens of book chapters in the field of functional urology, with a Scopus H-index of 42 and more than 1,900 citations. Additionally, he took part as editor of the SBU Urodynamic Atlas (2015) and the SBU-INUS Manual of Neuro-Urology (2017). Since 2012, Dr. Averbeck is coordinates the SBU working group responsible for the translation of the EAU Pocket Guidelines into Portuguese Language (this mutual cooperation initiative between SBU and EAU takes place biannually).
His main areas of interest are non-neurogenic male LUTS, BPH-related bladder dysfunction, neuro-urology/neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, neuromodulation techniques, and post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence.
